Some of us are social butterflies who love being around others and helping out. You just bubble over with enthusiasm and excitement, especially when you see new people you can share yourself with. Some of you are just wired to volunteer at church.
But most of us can get a little intimidated serving at church. Maybe the way we’re serving is new to us and we’re not quite sure how to do it right or if we’ll do it as well as someone else does it. Maybe we’re worried about being the people that everyone sees and talks to. We’re a little nervous about greeting or talking to others. We’re just in a very official position for our church and we’re unsure of the impact we can make. Maybe we’re willing, which is why we said yes, but maybe we don’t feel qualified.
Listen to the words of 1 Peter 4:8, “8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.” Now, don’t read the word sins here as if being nervous is a sin. Read it as, “Love covers over a multitude of shortcomings.”
We were all created by God to give and receive love. Love is the glue that holds all of this together. And people respond to it. You may be nervous about saying the exact right thing, or stepping in exactly the right spot, or what to do if this particular situation comes up, but DOING the right thing isn’t what holds this all together. LOVING one another is what keeps this going.
This Sunday, here’s your objective: love one another. Don’t worry about doing it “right”. Do it in love. I guarantee you that the new family that’s visiting for the first time will be blown away by how they were treated. It won’t be because you said a catchy phrase or did an exceptional job. It’ll be because you were a loving voice, face, and person that they encountered. Thank you so much for volunteering. Whatever you’re doing this week, cover it in love!
