Today is Easter! What an amazing day full of joy, love, family, and Jesus. Many of us have big plans for lunch today, time spent with loved ones, and time spent celebrating our savior. What a great day today is…and you’re stuck volunteering.
Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s a lot harder than others to serve on Sunday morning. Easter is one of those times. We want to be with our friends and family celebrating Jesus and you’re stuck watching kids or handing out communion trays. It’s not necessarily what you WANT to do on Easter Sunday. If that’s how you feel, you’re not alone. Jesus gets it.
The night that Jesus was arrested he prayed this prayer in Luke 22:42, “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” He didn’t WANT to go to the cross. He would rather have been doing something else. But above that want was a deeper commitment: to do the will of God. And that decision changed the world.
On Easter Sunday you are following right in the line and tradition of Jesus. It may not be exactly what you want to do, but you’re choosing to subordinate that want to the mission of God, just as Jesus did. Thank you. Thank you so much for being willing to sacrifice for this church. And, as small as that decision might seem, your willingness to be a friendly greeter, FCC Kid helper, plate passer, preparer, and whatever capacity you serve in might be the thing that touches someone’s heart. Your willingness to do God’s will might change somebody’s world. Thank you!
