Big things get the most attention. Big cars. Big houses. Big jobs. Big opportunities. Big vacations. Big sales. BIG is what matters to people. We tend to lean in that direction when it comes to service as well. Big acts of sacrifice. Big acts of heroism. Big gestures of love. The BIG gets all of our attention, even in our faith.

But Jesus was quick to point out the small things. In Matthew 19:13-15, parents bring their little children to Jesus for him to bless them. The disciples block the parents and scold them for interrupting Jesus BIG work to spend time with little kids. Jesus in turn scolds the disciples. He says the let the children come to him because God’s kingdom belongs to little things like children.

In Luke 21:1-4, Jesus is at the Temple with his disciples as wealthy people with come with BIG offerings and tithes. Then, a widow puts two small coins into the offering. Jesus says that widow did more for the kingdom than the rest of these wealthy people combined.

Jesus was quick to point out that small things make a big impact in God’s kingdom. And, it turns out, as usual, Jesus was right! It’s the small things that you do for the people at our church that make a huge impact. It’s that smile in the hallway, that warm greeting, that cheerfulness when someone drops off another screaming toddler, that makes a BIG impact on people. It’s the small things that you guys do every day that keeps people coming back and causes new people to stop and consider making Sundays at our church a permanent part of their life. It’s the small things that you all do that puts people in the right frame of mind as they go into the sanctuary to worship God and hear from his Word.

At times, what we do may feel small. I just want to remind you, that what you do this Sunday will have a BIG impact. Jesus was right. Thank you so much for volunteering!
